Please return the purple folder to school daily. We do this as a routine even if I occasionally send the folder home empty. Feel free to remove any papers that are inside.
Wishing you all a restful and happy weekend with your first graders!

We had another great day! Ask your son or daughter if they know the first thing that writers do. The answer that we're looking for is "make a plan." We will continue discussing what writers do in our class, and I'll share more about how we can support first grade writers at a later date.

We had a great first day! Thank you so much for all of the generous donations. If you haven't purchased anything yet, feel free to wait until further notice. We will let you know when we are in need of more/other supplies. Our whole grade level is now well-stocked, and it is thanks to all of your generosity!
Below are the stories we read today. Feel free to ask your child about the books. Perhaps he or she can name a favorite! *Blue painter's tape
*White copy paper *Glue sticks *Expo markers *Tissue boxes *Recess snacks *Baby wipes We provide crayons, etc, out of our classroom funds, and we ask for help from parents for some of these collective items. Thank you! If you can't find or are unable to afford all of these items please do not worry! We also will ask for other items as the year continues. Welcome to my site! I look forward to a great school year. I will share more information with families at our Back to School Night.
We had a very successful Walk-a-thon today! Thank you for the donations of time, money, and resources. The students had a great time walking the field and getting prizes in increments of 5 laps. The exercise also helped us stay warm!
In writing we have wrapped up our first round of informational writing, and we have begun persuasive writing. Feel free to ask your child about his or her opinion regarding a range of topics. They are practicing saying "____________ is the best because_________." There is no homework this week, October 19th - 21st, because of the short week. Please continue to read at home!
Hi room 16 families! Just FYI, I will be out on Wednesday, October 19th, for a training (along with the other first grade teachers). I will be back in the classroom on Thursday!
I will be posting weekly classroom updates for the 2016 - 2017 school year.
We discussed counting on starting from 5 in mathematics today as an addition strategy. For example, when adding 5 and 3, instead of counting all 5 dots and all 3 dots to get to 8, students would say "5, (and count the three remaining dots), 6, 7, 8." If your child is ready for more advanced mathematical thinking, have him or her count on starting at a higher number. For example, 102 plus 3. Enjoy your Monday!
