I hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving break. We are getting closer to the magic time in first grade, January. After winter break tends to be when first graders begin resembling second graders much more than kindergarteners! They grow up fast!
Meanwhile, we are hard at work in room 16. Rachel Schaffer, our awesome student teacher, will be leaving us in December. She will be done with her program, but, hopefully, she will come back and visit! This week, from December 2nd - December 6th, is her final solo week. As before, she will be in the classroom teaching while I remain on campus. Thanks for continuing to support her; it has been wonderful for our students to have two trusted teachers in our classroom!
Before Thanksgiving we began our Language Lab Rotations in first grade. All three first grade teachers mix up students based on English language ability, and from 8:45 - 9:20AM students are in their "language lab" class. This is a great opportunity for targeted language instruction for all students. We focus on speaking and writing using the writer's workshop model during this time. Students have been writing informational texts about sea otters. We go through the research and writing process together. When we revisit informational writing in the Spring, students will select their own topics.
