I enjoyed our first day and beginning to get to know everyone!

Please disregard my post from last school year (below) with the wish list of school supplies. That is from the previous school year, and many of you have just donated many supplies today. Thank you!
I am hoping to update, briefly, here a few times a week to keep you posted regarding our classroom activities. Feel free to subscribe to this blog or check back weekly. A few items we are running low on as the last month of first grade approaches:
*Recess snacks (pretzels, raisins, etc.) *Hand sanitizer *Band-aids Thank you for all and any donations! We appreciate it! I'm hesitant to post pictures of our lovely student faces, even for those of you that signed the media release at the end of the year, to ensure student privacy. Below are a few pictures of student work, but with no faces. There are our pinwheels from Pinwheels for Peace Day, our terrariums from science, and some engineering of towers with solids (also science). I hope to post more pictures sharing our upcoming weeks, and there will be more pictures to enjoy (with faces) in the Braly yearbook!
Parents, Guardians and Community Members:
Ms. Kamstra will be holding a very important meeting we encourage you to attend. This meeting will explain changes in how California is funding schools, and most importantly, allow you the opportunity to give input on how our school/district can improve our educational system. Childcare and Spanish translation will be provided. Date: Thursday, February 27th Time: 6:00-7:00pm Location: Braly Multi-purpose room We are excited for a new year of learning in Room 16! In our ELD and writer's workshop rotations, students have been working on narrative stories. In reading, we have been focused on partner work, where students work with a buddy at a similar reading level. Students are studying measurement in math (although we are consistently reviewing addition and subtraction), and we are still exploring air and weather in science. The 100th day of school is coming soon, which is great cause for celebrating our achievements while focusing on number sense!
I hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving break. We are getting closer to the magic time in first grade, January. After winter break tends to be when first graders begin resembling second graders much more than kindergarteners! They grow up fast!
Meanwhile, we are hard at work in room 16. Rachel Schaffer, our awesome student teacher, will be leaving us in December. She will be done with her program, but, hopefully, she will come back and visit! This week, from December 2nd - December 6th, is her final solo week. As before, she will be in the classroom teaching while I remain on campus. Thanks for continuing to support her; it has been wonderful for our students to have two trusted teachers in our classroom! Before Thanksgiving we began our Language Lab Rotations in first grade. All three first grade teachers mix up students based on English language ability, and from 8:45 - 9:20AM students are in their "language lab" class. This is a great opportunity for targeted language instruction for all students. We focus on speaking and writing using the writer's workshop model during this time. Students have been writing informational texts about sea otters. We go through the research and writing process together. When we revisit informational writing in the Spring, students will select their own topics. Tomorrow we will be participating in some Braly Plant Day activities in the school garden. A friendly reminder that you might not want to dress your child in his or her best clothes tomorrow! I hear there is some paint (and of course, some dirt) involved! Also, as some of the activities are outside, with the warm weather we have been having in the afternoons a sun hat/cap might be appropriate! Thanks!
Good morning! I just wanted to reiterate some Walk-a-thon information that went home in our Room 16 October Newsletter regarding the Walk-a-thon. Also, I wanted to add that the students can wear silly socks tomorrow in celebration of the Walk-a-thon, as well as Walk and Bike to School Day. Mismatched socks are a way to make socks silly if a child does not have silly socks. As mentioned in our newsletter, clothes comfortable for walking, as well as a hat and sunscreen, will make your child's experience more pleasant tomorrow. A light layer, such as a long sleeved shirt, might be helpful as well what with the fall weather. Teachers cannot apply sunscreen to students, so please do so before your student gets to school. As always, students can also bring a water bottle (labeled with his or her name is helpful) to stay hydrated. Looking forward to a wonderful Walk-a-thon! Students who raise at least $20.00 by tomorrow get to walk their first lap with Ms. Kamstra. The student who raises the most money for the school overall gets to be principal for a day! Thank you for your support!
